Painting Workshops

One Day Glass Painting Workshops with Pippa Blackall AMGP - in The Stained Glass Museum

To be held in the Stained Glass Museum workshop- South Transept Triforium, Ely Cathedral 10:00am-4:30pm

The morning is spent in learning the techniques of painting on glass using traditional paint and a variety of brushes. These techniques include tracing and matting, learning to control the paint to produce a confident trace-line and using different brushes to make a smooth and even matt. You will also work with a variety of brushes, sticks, quills, sponges, feathers etc to create different decorative effects in both wet and dry matts and to learn the techniques of shading. The glass will be fired at the end of the morning session.

The afternoon will be spent in applying further paint to develop the image and in using silver-stain, a material that imparts a yellow colour to the glass when fired. There will be a second firing and students will take home a finished piece.

The Cathedral can be cold so please wear warm clothing and an overall. Tea and coffee will be provided. It would be useful if you could let us know if you have had any previous experience. Please feel free to bring your own designs. Lunch: There will be an hour’s break for lunch. There are many nearby cafes and sandwich shops or you can bring a packed lunch.

Fusing Workshops

One day Glass Fusing Workshop with Estelle Lankester

6th November 2010

To be held in the Stained Glass Museum workshop- South Transept Triforium, Ely Cathedral 10:00am-4:30pm

The workshop will have a maximum of eight students, allowing for ample individual as well as group tuition.

During the morning session the tutor will explain the principles and theory of glass cutting, fusing and firing, explaining the various terms and stages used in fusing glass.

The techiques will include fusing clear and coloured glass using fritt, confetti, stringers, noodles and metal inclusions, with special emphasis on the construction of designs. This will be followed by students designing and making small glass items of their choice, such as tiles, coasters, jewellery or decorative hangings.

The tutor will provide examples of the different techniques, processes, fittings and results for students to handle and examine, but the emphasis of the workshop will remain on the creative designs that students can achieve by themselves, ensuring that every student will have an enjoyable and rewarding day.

Three Day Painting Workshops

A tutored course taught by Pippa Blackall
Group limited to five.

To be held in the Stained Glass Museum workshop- South Transept Triforium, Ely Cathedral 10:00am-4:30pm

These three-day workshops are designed for those who have already taken a one-day Painting Workshop at the Stained Glass Museum. The course develops the painting techniques further and also includes the designing, cutting and painting of glass to make a panel approximately 12” X 8”. It will not involve the leading and glazing which can be completed at a subsequent one-day workshop.

The group of no more than five participants will be tutored by a professional stained glass artist who will take you through the stages involved in making a stained glass panel.

You will be taught to:

· Design and cartoon a panel
· Take a cutline
· Cut the glass
· Paint and fire trace and matt
· Apply silver stain

The course will include notes and begin with a guided tour of The Stained Glass Museum to study technique and to give you inspiration. Please don’t worry if you don’t have a design idea to bring with you.  Ideally you will also have some experience of glass cutting, but this is not a strict requirement.

The fee does not include meals or accommodation. Included is a map, our recommended accommodation address and details of car parks. The Tourist Information Centre (Tel 01353 662062) can supply names of other B&B’s. The Cathedral can be cold so please wear warm clothing and an overall. If you possess and are familiar with your own glass-cutter and straight edge please bring them. Tea and coffee will be provided. There will be an hour’s break for lunch. There are many nearby cafes and sandwich shops or you can bring a packed lunch.

Leading/Glazing Workshops

One Day Glazing/Leading Workshop

These one day courses are held in the Old Dispensary, 13 St. Mary's Street, Ely between 9:30 - 4:30.
This workshop is limited to 5 people.

You will be given an introduction to the techniques employed in the manufacture of an ornamental leaded panel. If you have been on a stained glass painting workshop at the Museum you may like to lead up a panel incorporating your own piece of stained glass. All materials (glass, lead, solder etc. are provided) and tools are available for the use of the participants, although you may prefer to bring your own. You will be taken through each step of the process of constructing a panel and will practise the techniques before making your own panel.  The morning will be primarily spent learning to cut glass along cutlines provided (though you are welcome to bring your own simple design).  Once all your glass pieces are cut to size and shape, you will then be shown how to piece them together using

Tea and coffee will be provided.

Soldering/Copper Foiling Workshops

One day Copper Foiling workshop

To be held in the Stained Glass Museum workshop- South Transept Triforium, Ely Cathedral 10:00am-4:30pm

Students will be taught how to copper foil and solder their own simple lightcatcher in this class.  They will also be shown how to cut glass and the various techniques involved.  At the end of the day they will have finished a piece to take home.  There will be a range of designs from which students may choose to create their pieces. 

This workshop is intended for absolute beginners in this craft.
