Dark Illumine
Two glass artists re-visit Milton’s Paradise Lost
3 March – 10 April at The Stained Glass Museum

Dark illumine is an exhibition of contemporary stained glass by two artists who have taken ‘Paradise lost’ by John Milton as a starting point. Exploring some of the themes in the epic poem, both artists use a personal language and fresh approach to examine our intimate and inseparable, but often disturbing relationship with nature and the eternal.

KATHY SHAW uses lead, paint, discarded glass and old iconography to connect with the past and evoke our uncertain forecasts for the future. She studied stained glass at Swansea Institute and Central Saint Martin’s School of Art (MA Fine Art) She will be moving to the far north of New Zealand at the end of 2007.

TIM CUNLIFFE studied fine art at UCCA Canterbury and stained glass at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art. He has exhibited in the UK, Germany and Spain and teaches part-time for Hammersmith & Fulham Adult Education. His work focuses on the animal form and is strongly influenced by ancient And mediaeval art.

Our study weekends, visiting renowned centres of stained glass, have become a real highlight of the Museum’s year. In 2008 we shall be visiting Canterbury.

Our plan is to visit several locations in East Kent by coach on Saturday. Friday afternoon and Sunday morning will be dedicated to the cathedral, and will include a visit to the conservation studio on Sunday morning.

Saturday visits will include Bishopsbourne, Patrixbourne, Nackington, Wickhambreaux, Salmestone Grange, Ramsgate and Upper Hardres. We will see glass from 12th to 20th centuries, and as always we will have expert guides on hand throughout the weekend.

Comfortable accommodation and good food is an important part of our weekends. We will be staying at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge (www.canterburycathedrallodge.org).

There is a choice of two packages:
