St Wilfrid and St John Berchmans with The Presentation to our Lady of St Elisabeth in the Temple, 1927
Designed by Harry Clarke R.H.A. (1889-1931).
Executed in 1927 for the Lady Chapel of the Convent of Notre Dame, Dowanhill, Glasgow.
Made between September and December 1927 at the Glass House, Lettice Street, Fulham after which it was exhibited with its companion before installation in the Lady Chapel of Notre Dame, Dowanhill, Glasgow. In 1979 it was moved to Notre Dame College of Education, Bearstead and then to Chapel Studio, King's Langley, Hertfordshire.
The window depicts the 7th century Bishop St Wilfred in ascetic profile with St John Berchmans, the patron saint of young people, particularly novitiates. St Wilfrid a monastic founder, had a close association with St Etheldreda, encouraging her to separate from her husband in 672 and to devote herself to her religious life in Ely. The monastery founded here gave rise to Ely Cathedral.
