Bird quarry. 15th century.
Anonymous artist (English?)
Original location unknown
Medieval quarries - small lozenge-shaped panes of
glass - were the simplest form of stained glass, using only glass-paint and a
little yellow stain. They were made in their thousands and were often decorated
with amusing motifs, frequently, like this one, with subjects that mocked human
activities. This devout little bird is carrying a rosary. Other small medieval
fragments have been used to make up the borders.
