Madonna and Child, c.1930
Designed by Louis Davis (1861-1941). Made by Thomas Cowell.
From Thomas Cowell's home.
Louis Davis was originally a painter and illustrator before learning stained glass. This panel, adapted from a design by Davis for St Anselm's church, Hatch End, was painted by Thomas Cowell for his own house at Surbiton. The surface layer of blue 'flashed' glass has been removed in places by hydrofluoric acid to reveal the white glass below.
Much of Davis's best work, commissioned by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer, can be seen in Scotland. His masterpiece is the choir and other windows of Dunblane Cathedral (begun in 1913).

Inv. No. 1994/1 Presented by Mr John Wilson.
