Cherub scribe / Diana the Huntress, 1920
Designed by Christopher Webb (1886-1966).
From the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital.
Both Christopher and his brother Geoffrey were stained glass artists of repute and produced a large body of work. After an education at Rugby school Christopher was articled to the stained glass artist Sir Ninian Comper as an artist and designer. Comper recommended him to produce the designs for the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital, and they represent some of his earliest and best work. The panels for the hospital, which catered specifically for women, were all endowed by different groups and societies. Each bed had a panel situated above it.
Christopher Webb was a traditionalist with a lightness of touch reminiscent of work of the fifteenth century. Work on a larger scale can be seen in the cathedrals of Southwark and Chichester and in the church of St Lawrence Jewry-next-Guildhall.
