King George III, 1793
Designed and made by James Pearson (1740-1838).
From the King's Dining Room, Windsor Castle.
This panel is a faithful copy of a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds painted in 1780 which now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. This stained glass copy originally hung above a chimney-piece in the King's Dining Room at Windsor Castle. The King is depicted in coronation robes seated on the thirteenth century coronation chair in Westminster Abbey. The original by Reynolds, was one of a pair of double portraits of the King and Queen, exhibited at the Royal Academy in Spring 1780.
