Suicide of Charondas of Catanaea. c.1530.
Attributed to Dirick Vellert (c.1485-c.1547).
Original location unknown.
The story of Charondas of Catanaea, who broke his own laws and killed himself, was used by Roman author Valcrius Maximus to illustrate concepts of justice.
Dirick Vellert was one of Antwerp's foremost glass designers, producing many cartoons for roundels.
Roundels were often made in series (the four seasons, the five senses, the twelve months of the year, etc.). Using relatively cheap materials, their value lay in the superb skill of the painters.
This example was acquired by Thomas Cowell of James Powell & Sons (1870-1949).
Inv. No. 1992/4/12 Presented to the museum by John Wilson.
