Hind, early 15th century
Anonymous English Artist.
From the Rectory of Holy Cross Church, Byfield,
Northamptonshire.
This roundel is painted in a simple technique using
glass-paint and yellow stain. A stick or quill has been used to scratch out the
leaves and flowers from a dense layer of glass paint. It is typical of the
small-scale panel favoured in richer medieval houses. Painted roundels could be
bought 'off-the-peg', to be set into a casement filled with plain quarries.
Glazed windows were so valuable that they were sometimes moved from one house to
another.
Inv. No. 1990/7/1 On loan from the Rector and Parochial Church Council.
