Geometric Grisaille, c.1200-1250
Anonymous artist (English?).
Original location unknown. Acquired by the studio of James Powell & Sons, probably in the 19th century.
This is the oldest panel in the Museum, and still has most of its original medieval lead and glass. The panel is unpainted and relies on the pattern of the leads for its decorative effect. The clear glass is lightly tinted as a result of the impurities in the raw materials used to make it.
This kind of glazing, known as 'grisaille', was popular wherever a higher level of light was required or where a cheaper form of glazing was requested.
This panel was found in a drawer at Powell's (Whitefriars Studio) in 1968 together with a companion panel, labelled simply 'Old Glass'.

Inv. No. 1990/4 Lent by Alfred Fisher.
