Christ blessing the children, 1856
Designed and made by Thomas Wilmshurst (1806-80).
East window, St Catherine's Chapel, Ely Cathedral.
This window comes from St Catherine's Chapel. It is based on a painting of Christ Blessing the Children by the German 19th-century artist Friedrich Overbeck, a founder member of the German Romantic Brotherhood of artists called the Nazarenes.
Wilmshurst was influenced by the tranquil, rather sombre style of Overbeck's work. The window was replaced in the 1930s by a Hugh Easton window of the Crucifixion.

Inv. No. 1989/4 Lent by the Dean and Chapter. Conservation funded by The Worshipful Company of Glaziers.
