The Duke of Clarence as St George, 1905
Designed by John William Lisle (1870-1927), made by C.E. Kempe & Co.
From the Ambassadors' Staircase, Buckingham Palace.
Queen Alexandra commissioned this window in memory of her eldest son, Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence. The Duke died in 1892 at the age of 28 and is depicted in the guise of St George, the patron saint of England. The panel was damaged during an air raid in 1940.
Charles Eamer Kempe (1834-1907) began his artistic career as a church decorator. Inspired by the styles of the 15th and early 16th centuries, Kempe's firm became one of the most successful and prolific of the later 19th century. The company finally closed in 1934.
