St John the Baptist, c.1340, heavily restored 1906
Original design by Master Robert Ketelbarn (?).
Restored by Curtis, Ward & Hughes
Part of the east window, Selby Abbey, Yorkshire.
This figure of St John the Baptist was from a great
Tree of Jesse, a visual interpretation of Christ's family tree as recounted in
the New Testament.
The east window of Selby Abbey was severely damaged by a fire in 1906. The
restoration approach illustrated in this window, in which almost no medieval
glass has been preserved, has changed. Today new techniques enable modern
conservators to preserve rather than replace old glass.
Inv. No. 1983/18 Lent by the late Dennis King MBE.
