The Annunciation, 1858
Designed by John Hardman Powell (1832-95). Made by
John Hardman & Co.
From St Mary, West Tofts, Norfolk.
This depicts one of the most popular scenes in
medieval art and can be compared with the 14th-century version from Hadzor.
John Hardman Powell, pupil and son-in-law of pioneer architect A.W.N.Pugin
(1812-52), was the dominant designer in the Hardman firm until the end of the
19th century. Powell's languid and elegant style reveals his debt to Italian
14th-centuary painting.
Inv. No. 1982/4/4 Lent by the Diocese of Norfolk.
