'Ecce Virgo', c.1845.
Designed and made by Thomas Willement (1786-1871).
Part of the east window, Holy Trinity, Carlisle.
Isaiah's Old Testament prophecy 'Ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium' (behold, a young woman is with child and she will bear a son) foresaw the Virgin Mary's conception of the Christ Child.
Thomas Willement, a pioneering figure in the Victorian stained glass revival, became heraldic artist to George IV and artist in stained glass to Queen Victoria.
From the 1840s his work became far more Gothic in feeling, although his strong and bright colours are not entirely true to the medieval models he was copying.

Inv. No. 1980/15/1 Presented by the Diocese of Carlisle.
