St Lawrence, 1310-1330 (circa) From St Andrew, Woodwalton, Cambridgeshire. The lives of saints were popular subjects for medieval windows, the saints being generally recognisable by the objects associated with them. St Lawrence is holding the gridiron upon which he was put to death for his faith. Part of a two-light window, its companion depicts St Catherine. The muted colours and the use of greens and reds are characteristic of the fourteenth century. Inv. No. 1980/2/2 On loan from the Friends of Friendless Churches. |
