St Catherine, 1310-1330 (circa) From St Andrew, Woodwalton, Cambridgeshire. The lives of saints were popular subjects for medieval windows, the saints being generally recognisable by the objects associated with them. St Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of students, scientists, theologians and wheelwrights is shown here with the spoked wheel upon which she was martyred (and which gives rise to the name of the firework the Catherine wheel). Part of a two-light window, its companion depicts St Lawrence. The muted colours and the use of greens and reds are characteristic of the fourteenth century. Inv. No. 1980/2/1 On loan from the Friends of Friendless Churches. |
