Armorial Window, c.1775
James Pearson (c.1740-1838).
From the chapel of Denham Place, Buckinghamshire.
These panels depict the arms of the Hill family of Denham Place.
Heraldry, rather than figurative work, was a more a popular form of stained glass in the 17th and 18th centuries. The enamel techniques were ideally suited to delicate work, intended to be viewed at close quarters.
At least three of the panels are by James Pearson who also reset the other panels. Pearson was born in Dublin and trained in London. Commissioned to make the east window of Ely Cathedral in 1770, he never finished it. His work was celebrated for heraldry and figure painting although by his death his style of glass-painting had fallen from favour.
