Mary at the Empty Tomb, 1890
Made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
From the Good Shepherd Chapel, Hill House, Pulham Market, Norfolk.
This panel is one of three lancets showing Christ as the Good Shepherd with angels and followers. It is an example of the later work of Heaton, Butler & Bayne (shown earlier in the Gothic Revival section) in the more detailed, almost photographic style with more muted colour tones which the studio was using by the turn of the century.
The symbolism of the bats and lizards is obscure - these creatures are rarely mentioned in the Bible, figuring only in the list of unclean beasts given by the Lord to Moses and Aaron. They are perhaps used here to represent the release from night and evil brought about by the study of the Gospels, the large volume carried by the woman.

Inv. No. 1979/3 On permanent loan from Norfolk County Council.
