Face of my Father, 1892
Designed by J.W. Brown (1842-1928). Made by James Powell & Sons.
From Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, London.
One hundred panels of stained glass were removed from this church before it was demolished. Here a classically draped figure, in a sentimental Victorian pose is relieved by gritty painting on beautifully muted glass.
J.W. Brown was a painter of portraits and genre scenes in addition to becoming a freelance stained-glass designer in the Aesthetic style. He joined the stained glass firm of James Powell & Sons in 1877, eventually becoming its principal in-house designer. His most notable works are the east windows of St John the Divine Cathedral, New York and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.

Inv. No. 1978/6 Presented by the Diocese of London.
