Launcelot and Elaine, c.1910
Designed and made by Andrew Stoddart.
Domestic panel from the artist's home in Nottingham.
This panel shows the influence of the linear styles of Art Nouveau at the end of the 19th century. The romantic and secular theme is typical of the period. The tale of Lancelot, one of the knights of King Arthur's round table, is one of unfulfilled love, that of Lancelot for Guinevere, Arthur's wife and that of Elaine, the Lily Maid of Astolat, for Lancelot.
Inv. No. 1977/1 Presented by the Page family of Nottingham.
