Angel, 1863
Designed by J.H. Pollen (1820-1902). Made by James Powell and Sons.
Part of rose window, Roman Catholic Church, Rhyl, Clwyd.
John Hungerford Pollen 1820-1902 was associated with the pre-Raphaelite painters and first worked with them on the Oxford Union Debating Room murals in 1857. Pollen designed little stained glass, the most notable being a series of standing figures in the south aisle of St. Wilfrid's, Ripon. He was later to become involved with the Arts & Crafts movement.
The firm of James Powell & Sons played an important part in the revival of stained glass by collaborating with Charles Winston in his experiments with the manufacture of antique glass which reproduced the qualities admired in medieval glass, as well as its colour. During the second half of the 19th century, Powell's did much to promote the craft by employing a number of distinguished artists as freelance designers.
