Annunciation to The Virgin, c.1340
Anonymous English Artist
From the north aisle, St John the Baptist, Hadzor, Hereford and Worcester.
These panels are from a series of three two-light windows and tracery showing scenes from the infancy of Christ. They were extensively although sensitively restored by John Hardman & Co. in 1866 and the figure of the Virgin is the most completely original. The design of the figures placed under canopies but transcending the architectural plane, and the sculptural quality of the draperies are derived from the popular depiction of these scenes in the stone carving of the period. The striking simplicity of the painting of the Virgin's head and the bold delineation of her drapery bear witness to the sophistication and excellence of the glass painter.
