The Ascension, 1861 (detail)
Designed by J.R. Clayton (1827-1913), made by Clayton & Bell.
East window, St Peter the Great, Worcester.
John Robert Clayton and Alfred Bell (1832-95) founded their firm in London in 1855 and, by 1860, were perhaps the most highly regarded of contemporary studios, eventually becoming the most prolific. The firm was distinguished for its association with such eminent architects as G.G. Scott and G.E. Street and for having trained many successful designers such as R.T. Bayne, C.E. Kempe and Burlison & Grylls. The elegant stylisation of the figures, fine linear drawing and rich colouring are characteristic of their earlier style.
Inv. No. 1976/3 Presented by the Diocese of Worcester.
