Shields of Arms, 1829
Designed by David Evans (1793-1861). Made by Betton & Evans.
From the south chancel window, St Mary, Ellesmere, Shropshire.
These shields, which originally accompanied the four Evangelists, commemorate the Le Strange, Bassett de Blore and Stanley families. The rather bright colours are typical of the glass available to glass-painters before the revival of so-called 'antique' glasses in the later 1840s.
Betton & Evans have been criticised for their approach to restoration, replacing much original glass with their own work. In their day, however, Betton & Evans were much admired and their work, especially that at Winchester College Chapel in 1822, was widely acclaimed.

Inv. No. 1975/6 On permanent loan from the Parish Church Council, Ellesmere.
