Angel Musicians, 1910-12
Designed by Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98), made by Morris & Co.
From The Old Meeting House, Bristol Street, Birmingham
These angels are in the Italianate style of Burne-Jones's 1870s work. The designs were first used for a window in Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford in 1875.
During the 1880s his style underwent a significant change. Later windows, such as those in Birmingham Cathedral show the profound impact of Byzantine mosaics, both in their hieratic, elongated figure-drawing and in the technique, which uses small pieces of glass and dense, assertive leading.
Edward Burne-Jones was the most influential stained glass designer of the late 19th century and had a lifetime association and friendship with William Morris.
