The Marys at the Tomb, 1856 Designed and made by George Hedgeland (1792-1873). East window, St Mary, Great Brington, Northamptonshire. Hedgeland's career in stained glass was short but distinguished. In 1851 he exhibited at the Great Exhibition and in 1854 he was commissioned to make the great west window of Norwich Cathedral. In 1860, in poor health, he sold his studio and emigrated to Australia where he died. His work is characterised by his use of large pieces of richly coloured glass, softly painted with delicate cross-hatching, reminiscent of 16th century paintings. By the end of the 19th century his broad, pictorial style had fallen from favour. Inv. No. 1975/2/1 On loan from Earl Spencer. |
