Ministering to the sick; Suffer the Little Children, 1907 Designed and made by Henry Holiday (1839-1927). Part of the Durning-Lawrence Memorial window, Essex Unitarian Church, Notting Hill, London. This large three-light window depicts in the upper panels, incidents from the ministry of Christ, with the good works of saintly figures below. Henry Holiday is best known today as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876), but he was one of the leading stained glass artists of his time. He was a superb figure draughtsman and, influenced by his travels in Italy in 1867, his style, became increasingly classical in influence. In 1862 he became chief designer for James Powell & Sons. His involvement with the Arts & Crafts Movement led him to experiment in making his own glass. He particularly liked 'slab' glass which creates a 'jewel-like' effect. Inv. No. 1973/3/12 Presented by the Trustees of the Essex Unitarian Church. |
